Working with The Community

As a long time supporter of the Salvation Army, the Royal Canadian Legion, and the “Made in Peel” – Toys for Tots, the Peel Regional Police Association maintains a positive relationship with our community.  Our members are continually involved in fundraising drives for various organizations through the Peel Regional Police Service and through personal community involvement.

Recognizing that investment in our community yields great dividends, the Peel Regional Police Association is also a proud supporter of the Academic Awards Programs of both Sheridan College and Humber College.

In 2003 the Peel Regional Police Association participated in a new venture with the Police Association of Ontario, Canadian Tire, and the Fishing Forever Program.  In early spring the program … Kids, Cops and Canadian Tire Fishing Days was launched in Mississauga.  This program is aimed at establishing positive relationships between young people and police officers in their community.

In August 2003, the Peel Regional Police Association hosted its’ first Kids, Cops and Canadian Tire Fishing Day at Glen Haffey Conservation Area.  Approximately 50 young people from the Peel Region Big Brothers and Big Sisters organizations and their mentors joined up with a number of off-duty police personnel to enjoy a day of fishing and relationship building.  Everyone had a wonderful time.

In 2004 the event was moved to Lake Aquitaine in Mississauga.  This allowed us to bring it right into the community and the results were fabulous.  With over 500 children attending the 2004 event, and 600 at the 2005 event, it is clear we have been successful in reaching out to the youth in the community.  With the support of the Peel Regional Police Service, children and their families have not only been treated to a day of fishing, but have been able to see displays from the Canine Unit, the Bomb Disposal Unit, the Tactical Search and Rescue Unit and others.

The Peel Regional Police Association is proud to have its members participate in yet another community event where they work one on one with the young participants.
In July of 2006, the Peel Regional Police Association and it’s events partners moved the 4th Annual Kids, Cops and Canadian Tire Fishing Day to the Heart Lake Conservation Area.  The event was held on another beautiful day which attracted hundreds of people to the event.  With volunteers from the Membership, the Auxiliary Bureau, the Peel Regional Police Association and the Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, the day developed into one of building relationships with the community.  This year, due to generous support from our sponsors, all participants enjoyed free hot dogs and beverages along with their great experiences fishing.

The Peel Regional Police Association has been working with the Peel Regional Police Service to generate a positive learning environment for young persons in the community.  Each year, many officers and civilian personnel volunteer hundreds of hours of their own time to events such as this to promote a better relationship with the communities we serve.  Keep an eye out for the announcement of next year’s event here and on the web page of Fishing Forever at www.fishingforever.ca !

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS

Last year the Association started stocking a number of “Support our Troops” items for sale including yellow ribbon window decals, lapel/tie pins and golf and tee shirts.  Sales have been steady over the year as our membership embraces the opportunity to show their support for Canada’s Armed Forces. Recently the Board of Directors of the Association initiated another “Support Our Troops” project.  Last week the Association shipped “care packages” to our Members, their Spouses, and Members Dependants that are deployed with the Canadian Armed Forces in Afghanistan.  These packages include such items as DVD movies, magazines, clothing, foodstuffs and personal hygiene products.
The Peel Regional Police Association is proud to send these tokens of support on behalf of the 2,500 members, particularly as we approach the Christmas season.
